Mr Buti Manamela was appointed as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training from 3 July 2024. He previously served as Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation from 17 October 2017 to 19 June 2024. He was Deputy Minister in The Presidency from 26 May 2014 to 16 October 2017.
Mr Manamela serves as a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party and in the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Development Management from Wits University, and studied Digital Electronics at the then Mamelodi College (now Tshwane North Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College).
Mr Manamela served as Deputy President of the South African Students’ Congress, President of the then South African College Student Association (now South African TVET Student Association), Local Organiser for the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union, and as the National Secretary of the Young Communist League of South Africa from 2003 to 2014.
